Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, British Columbia (Pt. 1)

Joffre Lakes Provincial Park has some serious hiking trails!

I have been in British Columbia this week and the weather has been very unpredictable. Right now, there are over 600 wildfires and the province has declared an emergency. I was in Kelowna at the beginning of the week, and we had to leave. The smoke covered the sky and filled my lungs. I shot a video of the scene:

So, I was advised to head back to the coast. I spent time in Vancouver, Whistler and these are some photos from my 5 hour hike at Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. I visited all three lakes; the three glacier-fed lakes – Lower, Middle and Upper Joffre Lakes.

I am no expert hiker (I was SO exhausted after these trails). But  am told the hike can take anywhere between 3.5 – 6 hours.

These photos are in no particular order.

  1. i’m sorry to hear of your wildfires

our news is so consumed by politics, that it seems the world is going by unnoticed. be safe !

love, love the images you’ve posted from your trip. it’s good to see places of this earth still somewhat untouched by the hand of mankind.

  2. The video of the conditions is very sad. Glad you found some untouched beauty to photograph.

  3. Hi Emily. OMG 600 wildfires. I live in Northern California, we are used to wildfires in the hills but recently fires destroyed entire neighborhoods, it was devastating. OMG look at all that smoke 🙁 I’m not an expert hiker either. A 3.5-hour hike sounds fun and challenging. You got some beautiful shots, Emily. I hope you have a great week.

    1. I live in the Toronto area, so we don’t have to worry about wildfires too much — although, up north this year, there were significant fires. But there is nothing quite like seeing it first hand — a real education.

  4. It’s like heaven, Emily…untouched, unspoiled, unravaged. But the wildfires break my heart. Astrid’s brother lives on Vancouver Island and can smell and feel it in his throat. So sad.

  5. Wow, these photos are amazing…I seriously need to visit this park someday! Also it is too bad that you encountered all that smoke! We’ve been dealing with the same issues here in Seattle for weeks, and we just can’t wait until the air quality gets better!

    1. Thank you Valerie — we were lucky to have had a couple of good day 🙂 I think the smoke is dissipating, though. I have seen some recent photos and it looks like the situation is getting better.
