Durham Flight Centre

There’s nothing quite like flying, and if you’re looking to explore the skies from up high, Durham Flight Centre offers sightseeing tours for $210 for three people (not bad once you divide up the costs).

To get a taste of what the tour offers, Durham Flight Centre took us up in a Cessna 172 aircraft, to Port Perry, Lake Scugog, and back to Oshawa. We couldn’t have asked for better weather: minimal winds, and excellent visibly. Our pilot, Spencer, even let Scott fly for a bit!

The Cessna 172 was first introduced in the 1950’s, and can travel up to about 240 km/hour. For our tour, we glided at about 2,500 feet.

Overall, Durham Flight Centre will give you the best bang for you buck when booking a sightseeing tour. I had researched a number of other options before choosing them. Other areas you can choose from when booking your tour include: Toronto waterfront/downtown, Niagara Falls, Kawartha Lakes, and Prince Edward County. Click here for more information.

Steve Martin & Martin Short at Casino Rama

Steve Martin & Martin Short

It’s no secret, I am a huge fan of Steve Martin – not just of his acting, or comedy, but of his writing. When I finished high school, I read “Shopgirl” – a 2000 novella penned by the playwright Martin. Since then, I was hooked. I bought every book, and spent my nights catching up on everything I missed. More recently, I found inspiration in “Born Standing Up,” a very personal memoir released as I was entering my final year of college.

Last weekend, I saw Steve Martin live at Casino Rama with Martin Short. The show titled: An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life With The Steep Canyon Rangers . This was my first time seeing him on stage like that, and after all these years, it seemed worth the wait and the 2 hour drive to Orillia.

The pair chatted on stage, shared memories about fame, fans and films, and spent time showing off solo; Martin Short sprawled across the piano, singing about his family, and struggles: “My rock bottom is still better than your wildest dreams.”  The Hamilton native went on to say, he’s always wanted to perform at Casino Rama, with childhood desires to play cowboys and Indian casino owners.

Steve Martin entered the stage with his banjo, and the Grammy-winning Steep Canyon Rangers (whom I interviewed last year for Talk Radio AM640, click here). He took a moment to recognize the band, literally, before performing a solo. “Now that I’ve introduced the band, I am going to do a solo.”

Fast-forward a bit, and old footage was shared on screen, including Steve Martin’s time as “The Great Flydini,” an amazing illusionist magician on Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

This was their last stop on the tour, and the show lasted for two hours. But before it wrapped up, we got five more minutes of the amigos. Back on stage to meet contract requirements, they jokingly sang.

A special thanks to Casino Rama; I had an evening I surely won’t forget.

Piggy Backing at Greenwood Park Ajax

It’s the last week of March, and this past weekend we enjoyed some well-above average temperatures. At one point, we hit 17.5C! Definitely spring-like weather.

To end off the Easter long weekend, we strolled through my favourite Durham Region park: Greenwood Park in Ajax. It was quiet, and golden and green.

And here we are, piggy backing into the sun! 🙂

DIY Easter Eggs

‘Tis the time of year for DIY Easter eggs! This year, I decorated Deadpool, Minions, Cookie Monster and emoji eggs.

For this project, I bought plastic eggs, acrylic paint, a sharpie, and paint brushes. We also used a heater to speed up the drying process.

A quick note: try to avoid water colour paint. We used it the first time round, and found it much harder to work with. The acrylic paint dried faster, with minimal streaking.

Welcome, Spring!

“The first real day of spring is like the first time a boy holds your hand. A flood of skin-tingling warmth consumes you, and everything shines with a fresh, colorful glow, making you forget that anything as cold and harsh as winter ever existed.” —Richelle E. Goodrich

Spring officially arrived at 11:30 p.m. EST, Saturday. Oh, how I am excited for new beginnings and jean jackets.
