Just because

It’s almost midnight on this quiet night. I know I’ve been taking a break from blogging these past few weeks, but for good reason. I’ve found myself caught up with work and improvement meetings. With the goals I’ve set out for myself, now has become a crucial time for me to get better, and soon move onto new opportunities and adventures. To be honest, I don’t think my camera batteries are even charged right now. But I did want to share a small post – something meaningful and something that makes me happy. Of course when I think happiness, I think Jimmy Dean. Yes, I get it. I may possess a “crazy cat lady” vibe, but I can’t think of anything that makes me smile as much as this little man.

I was “digging” through some old photos, and I came across this one taken a few years ago. I always make him pose with me for webcam photos … but you know what, even though his eyes seem to say “SAVE ME”, his heart is REALLY saying, “I love you too, Emily.”

Café Mirage, Kennedy Commons

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to check out a café outside of the Durham Region called Café Mirage, located at Kennedy Commons in Scarborough. The day was drizzling and the wind was cold; a perfect afternoon to spend inside the cozy atmosphere of this GTA date spot.

Café Mirage was recommended to me more than once, but serves best for the romantics, I think. The chairs are big and comfy, and the desserts are large … too large for any one person to finish alone. But their selection and service is fabulous. So, if you and your hunny usually have trouble picking a treat to split, you shouldn’t have a problem at Café Mirage. I was born with a sweet tooth (a curse, really, especially if you’re trying to stay healthy), and there was a few options that really enticed me. Unfortunately, I will have to taste those another day.

Stompin Tom Connors

Last night, a great Canadian passed away: Stompin’ Tom Connors. The news came during Hockey Night in Canada, and has left many Canucks with heavy hearts. Unfortunately, I never had the privilege to meet him, but his voice rang prominently in our family. I asked my mom to share some memories …

“My dad, Thomas Baker, and Stompin’ Tom Connors first became friends in 1972, after my dad did all of his record covers in copper art. Stompin’ Tom called to thank him, and that’s when a friendship started … My parents went to his wedding and were part of the audience at his famous Horseshoe Tavern performance for the filming of his movie ‘Across This Land.’ We also had the chance to visit his childhood home in Skinner’s Pond, Prince Edward Island, and met his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aylward. As kids, he had a car pick us up and take us to a recording studio to see how it was all done. He let us try singing Name the Capitals, a really fun and exciting opportunity. As a souvenir, he gave us each a signed dollar bill. He was a wonderful, kind and humble man, a true Canadian who made me proud to be a Canadian, too.”

Happy Birthday Judy

Today is a very special day, for a very special person in my life. Today is my cousin Judy’s birthday. She is now in her mid-20’s, celebrating 24 fantastic years.

I’ve mentioned Judy in the past – actually, several times on this blog (here and here). She has been a constant in my life, and a true friend. Despite the ups and downs and the people who’ve come and gone, Judy has proven to be someone who will stand by my side, listen to my ramblings, and – at times – lend her company when everyone else has disappeared. I recall all the Backstreet Boys events (yes, I remember when A.J and Brian waved to us!), the homemade fan girl shirts, failed skateboarding attempts, long walks home from school (especially in the freezing cold) and the random 50 (Fitty?) cent  concert … that my dad took us to! Such an eclectic mix of memories, but I wouldn’t trade a second of it.

Judy – I hope your day brings delicious cake, British accents and Lord of the Rings references. Thank you for never judging me, and always being an inspiration. I am beyond blessed. Happy birthday to the best, of the best … Oh, and if you’re wondering, yes. We’ve always been *this* fashionable. Don’t be jealous.

Isabella’s Chocolate Café

Isabella’s Chocolate Café in Oshawa is pretty famous in the Durham Region. For weeks, people had encouraged me to stop by. And for the first time this week, I made the trip there.

The café is located on King Street South, between the TD Bank and the jewellery store – which is a bit tricky to find. Initially, I tried to find the shop around Valentine’s Day, but couldn’t spot it while driving. So if you take a closer look, you’ll find their logo on a window, between those two establishments.

Isabella’s features a lot of homemade treats and a variety of hot chocolates, including Isabella’s chocolate. That particular drink is just like hot chocolate, but features their own dark chocolate chips. I sampled it, and it’s absolutely rich in flavour – a definite for chocolate enthusiasts.

Isabella’s also allows customers to buy their chocolate truffles. They come in beautiful wrap – perfect for gifts or for holidays. But if local treats don’t sell you on this café, Isabella’s is also run by Rosanna Bruno – who is totally engrossed in the local entertainment and arts scene. I had some time to chat with her on my way out, and she is actively promoting events in the Durham Region. She has a certain passion for it. It’s a wonderful thing to see. And don’t forgot to say hi to local musician Patrick Dorie. He works hard behind the counter, all the while going after a career in music – something he is truly destined for.
