That’s a wrap

This is the third post in a series of photos taken last Friday, at our downtown Whitby studio. The day served as a fantastic opportunity to focus on lighting techniques, and has allowed me to include some studio portrait work into my new portfolio. Unfortunately, I took so many photos I can’t share them all, including some portraits of our only male subject, Dave. However, I’ve made a couple of those available on my homepage.

Anyhow, this final series post captures our last 10 minutes in the studio. Before our day was done, I was asked to pose for some photos too – just as I asked my photographer friend Kate-Lynn to do in “Behind Her Lens.” If you’re interested in checking out some of her photos, they have been posted on her brand-spanking-new blog site, Abstrakt Foto.

Part of my new approach to photography is shooting primarily with prime lenses … and in the coming weeks, I expect to be posting images from my 35mm. A series I am super excited to share, too. Until then, THAT’S A WRAP!

The ladies of our photoshoot

Since you’ve already met my photographer friend, Kate-Lynn, it’s time to introduce you to the two ladies that came out to our shoot this past Friday.

Here’s Kristina –  a young college student in the region. Very much immersed in popular culture, she served as a beautiful fresh face for us to take photos of. Her eyes, very much like Kate-Lynn’s, are big and bright – making them the first thing you notice about her. Initially shy, Kristina quickly opened up and ended up being quite fun on set.

Behind her Lens

Kate-Lynn Lupo is one of the best photographers I know, and today, we invited some people out for a photoshoot in a downtown Whitby studio. She did a basic lighting “workshop” and we spent the afternoon taking pictures.

What made this day so special is the opportunity I was given to photograph Kate-Lynn. I’ve known her since grade 2, we walked home from school together almost every day from grades 9 through 12, we joined our high school’s photography club, and we spent many hours going on random adventures throughout town. Her photos have always inspired me, and I feel so lucky to have been blessed with this life long friend.

Did I mention all the things she’s done for my career? From being brutally honest and properly critiquing my work, to answering my frantic calls when stressed over an assignment … but all the while still encouraging me every step of the way. I still feel like I have a lot to learn before I reach her level, but she’s always willing and excited to help teach me.

Here’s the last set of photos we took. I think these photos are adorable, and really capture the fun and silly side I love about Katey. I must say, it was a great start to our long weekend here in Ontario.

28 Valentine’s

It was in October 1984 when my parents first started dating. Now, 28 years later, they are still going strong and celebrating another Valentine’s Day together. And I suppose it’s cliché to share a quote, but whether you’re single or taken, take a few minutes to think about these words today, “If it’s true that all you need is love, than I’m a rich man … I’ve loved, I’ve been loved, show me someone else with as much as me.” – Paul Brandt, Rich Man.

I hope you’re finding yourself as blessed as I am today. Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Winter wonderland

Yesterday, Toronto saw about 30 centimetres of snow. It was one of the biggest snowfalls we’ve had in years, and many residents in southern Ontario woke up to piles of the white stuff engulfing their vehicles, mounting their driveways and most of all, giving them a great excuse to take a day off work.

The windchill made it feel like almost -25C, and I tried my best to stay warm indoors. Luckily for me, Thursdays and Fridays are my days off. But this morning, I took a walk down the snowy pathways, and took a few photos to remember the storm, even though it had mostly dissipated.
